Crossing lines part II
World is getting weirder around me. I am a lone customer at Subway.
A black girl comes in. She has only one dollar in her black hand.
She wants to buy one slice of tomato and two slices of cheese.
I have never heard of such a sandwich. Indians don’t want her in a store. I am eating my huge salad with turkey.
I will not give her my big salad with turkey (not double turkey).
They still want her out of the store and she still wants two slices of cheese and one slice of tomato for one dollar. They argue.
I stand up and walk up to the counter and Indians.
-I will pay for her sandwich.
They are confused.
I turn to her:
– Which sandwich do you want, it is on me.
– I don’t want a sandwich, I want two slices of cheese and one slice of tomato.
I turn to Indians. Please, let me have what she wants, two slices of cheese
– which one, baby?
– American.
two slices of American cheese and a slice of tomato.
I will pay.
They stare at me some more but
get her two slices of cheese and one slice of tomato on a salad plate.
– How much?
– Two dollars they say.
The black girl rushes to give me her one dollar, I add one more.
– For here or to go?
The girl says to go.
And there she goes happy. Says – thanks.
Indians are staring at me for the rest of my meal. I am a lone customer. I have crossed some line again, this time Indian.
